A Natural Affection

by Chris Livingstone Marketing Consultant Business in Vancouver Media Group
During my 15-year, very amateur golf career, travels have placed me on tee-boxes in some spectacular settings. I have been fortunate enough to tee-off in front of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club at the Old Course in St. Andrews and even settled in nicely for two years in Monterey, California, where most know, is the home of Pebble Beach. There have been many other great rounds of golf in between, but since returning to Vancouver from two-years of desert golf in Arizona, I have found nothing as refreshing as Garibaldi Springs Golf Resort.

A young course for sure, but the overgrown natural surroundings give the sense that the fairways had been tucked away there for decades. Just last Sunday was my 10th time I had been to Squamish to play Garibaldi and it was more challenging than all the other times prior. I knew the wind was howling a bit on my drive up from Vancouver so I figured I would need to play my best to score well. I didn't remember such gusty conditions anytime before, but you kind of expect it from a town known for its kite surfing. The wind did make for an interesting round of golf, but it only added to the excitement of why you play Garibaldi. It is the challenge.

It was on this same day that a tournament went out in the morning and I with my friend, who lives on the first tees, had watched participants carefully lay-up before the creek. We also find this to be the best plan of attack. Everyone seemed to be having fun, even if they found themselves re-teeing for three. This feeling was later confirmed when my friend and I went over to the clubhouse for our afternoon tee time. Everyone was sitting on the patio enjoying themselves and being reminiscent of their earlier adventure.

I know what it takes to put together a successful golf tournament and you could just tell the staff had met the players' expectations.

I have had the pleasure of speaking with many of the staff during my visits and have even come to know some of them by name. They give the feeling that they really want you to just have a good time. Even the course marshal is more of a goodwill ambassador then a supervisor. She sympathetically gave me a golf ball she found after she watched me shank one into the trees on ten.

There is affection for this course that has built inside me that was completely unexpected. Other golfers have experienced this I am sure. Enough proof would be the fact that people pay several thousands of dollars to become private members to effectively play around in a really nice park. If I lived in Squamish, I would quickly realize that once or twice a month at Garibaldi would not suffice and my own sort of membership would be necessary.

I am thinking I will make the drive up there again this weekend.

PUTTING WITH YOUR DRIVER
Tony Vogel Tips from a Pro
by Tony Vogel, CPGA Professional

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to hit your drives as accurately as your putts? Or, hit a 600 foot putt as accurately as a 10 foot putt! Let me take you into the mind of one of the best ball strikers ever!

Moe Norman use to say that the driver is the easiest club to hit because you always have a perfect lie. (up on a tee, same height each time). I've often wondered how he was able to hit short or long shots everyday with such accuracy. When asked what he was thinking when hitting 50 yard pitch shots, Moe said it was like hitting a 150 foot putt!

When making a putt you should be using a one lever system from your shoulders down to the club head, your wrists locked to help you with accuracy.

The only problem with this is there is a limit to the amount of distance you can produce with a one lever system. Thus you must let your wrists set or cock in golf terms to create a two lever system to produce more club head speed. (If you are not sure what I mean, take a hammer and set a nail and notice how you tap first with a firm wrist and once the nail is started you begin to cock your wrist when you pound to produce more speed with the hammer to strike the nail into hard wood.) The trick is to create the two levers in the back swing and then move the arms forward like a one lever system in the forward swing to create more speed but not lose any accuracy. This I believe is what Moe meant when he said what he did. He chose a pitching wedge instead of a putter because he had to get his ball airborne. He swung his arms back setting a second lever in motion because of the added club head speed he needed to hit the ball 150 feet and then swing forward like he always does and he now had the distance he needed without losing any of the accuracy. If you do this with all clubs and drivers you should hit it straight down the middle whatever distance you need.
